Cyanica is a zine that publishes the works of neurodivergent, disabled, and chronically ill authors, enriching the publishing space with diverse words, perspectives, world-views, and experiences. While ‘Cyanica’ publishes forms including essays, fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, and visual art, we encourage any style that works best for empowering an author's voice! 

At Cyanica Press, we wholeheartedly believe that creatives deserve to be compensated for their art. Rightfully paying underrepresented authors and artists to support their creative development is essential. Currently, the payment rate for Cyanica Zine is 50$ AUD per submission.

Issue 1 theme: Muchness

‘You're not the same as you were before. You were much more... muchier... you've lost your muchness.’ – The Mad Hatter

We crave your madness! We want your loud, your messy, your over-the-top, your tender and intense. Tell us what it means to take up space in a world that wants you small – to feel too much and refuse to shrink. We’re looking for work that overflows: poetry that riots with feeling, personal essays about being ‘too extraordinary’ or ‘too weird’, art that dazzles with colour and chaos. Give us maximalism, contradictions, abundance, the beauty and terror of excess. Send us your stories, your art, your ‘too many feelings’, and let them spill off the page. Cyanica’s first issue is dedicated to and written by those who dare to be too much (and love it anyway)!

Unsaid is a mini blog showcase that publishes works that don’t quite ‘fit’ anywhere else, whether that be in form or subject matter. While celebrating the traditional styles of writing (short fiction, poetry, nonfiction), we are also desperate to include non-standardised works, such as art writing, experimental pieces, unconventional poetry, reviews, screenplays, and more! If you’re looking for quirky (affectionate) words written by quirky (also affectionate) authors, this we where you’ll find them :)

Submission Dates: All year round.

Submission Guidelines

Prose: Maximum 4000 words. You may submit a short story, microfiction, vignettes, an excerpt from a larger work, or a script. Please submit written works as an editable Word doc.

Essay: Maximum 4000 words. Include title and references/citations (if any). Essays forms are flexible and may range from formal to informal (letters, stream of consciousness, journal entries, reviews etc). Please submit written works as an editable Word doc.

Poetry: Maximum 10 pages. Suites of poetry are more than welcome! Please submit written works as an editable Word doc or PDF for experimental poetry forms.

Visual: Visual can include (but is not limited to) art, photography, and collages. Attach relevant images. Include title and medium. Exegesis/ekphrasis is optional but encouraged. Please submit visual works as a PNG, JPEG, or PDF.

What to Include in Your Email

  • The name you would like to be published under.

  • Max 100-word author bio.

  • If your piece has been previously published anywhere else. Please give us the details of the name of the publication and the date it was published, so that we may credit the original work.

  • Optional: A brief cover letter detailing the heart of your piece.

  • Anything else you’d like us to know!

FAQs

  • As this is a publication built by and for neurodivergent, disabled and underrepresented creatives, we ask that only authors and artists who identify as such submit. This is a publication dedicated to representing voices that have been traditionally excluded from the literary space, so we ask that all the work that is feature within this press be the same community.

  • Not at all! While this zine is by and for neurodivergent and disabled creators, your work doesn’t have to be explicitly about that experience. If your work explores neurodivergence or disability, great – but if it’s about heartbreak, glitter, identity, obsession, survival, romance, ghosts, or your favourite video game? That’s also perfect. As long as it comes from you, it belongs. We welcome many forms and genres from experimental speculative fiction, to deeply personal essays, to abstract visual art! If it’s on theme and yours, we want it.

  • Yes! You retain full rights to your art, so as long as the previous publisher allows republications, feel free to submit it here to Cyanica. We only ask that you credit the original publication (name and year) so that we may acknowledge the original work.

  • Yes! At Cyanica, we wholeheartedly believe that creatives deserve to be compensated for their art. Rightfully paying underrepresented authors and artists to support their creative development is essential. Currently, the payment rate for the Cyanica Zine is 50$ AUD per submission, while our online blog Unsaid pays 5$ AUD per submission

  • Yes! We want to showcase as much of your work as possible. If you have multiple pieces that you think could fit within the theme, we are desperate to read and publish them all!
